Oryx and Crake

Writing in genre versus simply using the elements of a genre and having it be completely literary is a very tough question in which both sides can argue valid points. Personally, I believe that you cannot use the elements of a genre without making that book or story that genre. Oryx and Crake explore this in that it combines certain elements of science fiction, but also does not seem entirely like a science fiction book. I argue however that because it is written with the elements of science fiction, that makes it a science fiction book. I don't however believe that it is important to make this distinction and that the reader should make this based on how they felt the book was written.

Interview with a Vampire

In the story  Interview with a Vampire , we see the relationship between two adult vampires and one child whom they bit. There are three relationships portrayed in those three characters, one between Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat, Lestat and Claudia, and Louis and Claudia. The relationship between Louis and Lestat is complex in that Lestat is the reason why Louis is a vampire so Louis feels some animosity towards him and at the same time he was dependent on him as he did not know how to be a vampire in the beginning of the book. Witchy woman

Witches, until the introduction of warlocks, have always been a uniquely female role in fantasy and myth. It shows women who have power yet often in a negative way since witches historically have been evil satan worshippers who murder people and steal livestock for their dark rituals. Although lately, this is taking a turn in recent years since witches are starting to be seen as more fighters of demons and not satan worshippers. This incidentally follows the social trend of women in power in todays society. Women in powerful positions are becoming and have become the norm in many cultures around the world. So the concept of the witch or any other woman in power is become less and less of a scary thought.

The difference of the western and eastern horror

There are many differences between the eastern and western cultures in terms of literature and art. The horror genre is definitely no exception. In many Japanese horror stories, this example being A Wild Sheep Chase, they often blend in magical realism and some mystery giving the reader a sense of anticipation and anxiety. In more western horror stories we are often introduced not to a specifically magical realism, but the idea of an afterlife and more often the idea of the undead. Western horror, although thrillers are a sub-genre of horror, do not always give the reader the same anxiety that an eastern horror story would. I personally believe that the reason for this is because you get a sensation of a calm dread in the characters of eastern horror and in most western horror stories the characters are usually always active and alert.
